About 410 years ago, in Amakusa there was "the Amakusa Collegio" the theological college which did letterpress printing for the first time in Japan.

Collegio is Christian's top institution which is Portuguese equivalent to an English word "college".
Amakusa Collegio was established in Oita by an inspector of Jesuit -- Mr. VARINYANO in 1591 Azuchi-Momoyama era.
Then, it transfered to Amakusa escaped from Hideyoshi Toyotomi's Christian suppression.

In Amakusa Collegio they learned theology, Latin literature, Japanese literature, nature science, music and religion arts. Moreover, for ther first time in Japan, books such as the Aesop tales, the dictionaries and piety documents etc. were printed by Gutenberg letterpress machine braught by boys mission from Europe.

It is globally known that they "Asakusa Books" are very valuable literary, ideologically and scientifically.

And the strong gorgeous early European culture is prospered under the oldest university in research and the education of Western modern science in Japan.
About 50 years later after that, the people who received the advanced education joined "Amakusa-Shimabara Christian Battle" against the oppression by Edo government under the Christianity which explained the equality.
Making 37,000 people in this island rise in arms, all believers were slaughtered in that battle which had never seen in world history.

Then, the faith was hided under the rule of Edo government control, it became secret Christian culture and was influenced of the foreign culture in the way of Nagasaki.

We introduce the treasure of Amakusa island in this program.

Only one precious material which described concretely the situation when Shiro Amakusa commands a riot group. It is the report which the Edo government drew up. Moreover, by the manufacture in 1739, we introduce the oldest statue of Shiro Amakusa in Japan.

Once upon a time, the missionary who has crossed the sea brought the sacred cup which revived through hundreds of years, there might be no other one in the world.
It supposed to be used for a Christian's ceremony.
When soaked in water, surface dirt (Was it camouflage?) all came off, and the black cross appeared.

The origin of words in Amakusa dialect

The Amakusa language is classified in Kumamoto and Fukuoka dialect.
An archaic word, a foreign word, etc. are further mixed in response to the influence of the dialect of Nagasaki, Kumamoto, and Kagoshima.
It had been affected by Nagasaki, Kumamoto and Kagoshima dialect in addition to the mixture of archaic and borrowed words.

Also it remains the words from China, brought by missionaries from Portugal in the Age of Great Voyages, and we can see the influence by Dutch because the island is close to Dejima in Nagasaki, the only place where they had permission trade with the foreign countries.

For example, "you" can be said in various ways such as WARU, NUSHI, AATA and KONTA, these all words appear in the archaic word dictionary, they were transmitted from the center of Japan to Amakusa, and are considered to have remained as a dialect as they are.

And glass is called bee-doro in Amakusa, it is said to be from Portugese, small glass ball is bee-dama.
In addition, the words such as shabon (soap), bohbura (pumpkin) and sarasa (cloths) came from Southern Europe.
Moreover, like JATTON and SOGYANJAN, chin, ton and jan are attached in the end of the sentence and sound like music.

Recently, the children who can speak totally in Amakusa dialect are also decreasing.
A dialect is culture peculiar to the area told over generations from antiquity, we would like to tell the next generation with our heart.
